Why is my watch now restricted?

Why a watch shows as “Restricted”, what’s affected, and how to restore full access.

Important update: your Spacetalk app connection

We’ve identified that your account doesn’t currently have an active Spacetalk Watch Subscription or SIM plan linked to it. An active subscription or plan is required for ongoing access to all watch-to-app features.

What features are now restricted?

Your watch stays paired, but it enters a “Restricted” state in the app. This removes access to:

  • 📍 Live watch location — real-time location and location history.

  • 💬 App chat — sending and receiving messages via the app.

  • ⚙️ Watch settings — managing School Mode, keyboard functions and contacts.

Important: If you plan to reinstate access, please do not unpair your watch. Your device stays linked to your account for 90 days, and all features are restored immediately once a plan or subscription is active.

How to stay connected

Option 1: Activate a Spacetalk mobile / wearable plan (recommended)

The smoothest experience is a Spacetalk plan made for our watches — it includes pairing with the app at no extra cost. Where to get one:

Region

Where to get a watch plan

Australia (AU)

In the app (Membership › Add a plan), or at spacetalk.co/watch-plans

United States (US)

Contact us if you need a SIM card first, then activate via our US mobile portal (spacetalk.co/watch-plans).

United Kingdom (UK)

Contact us if you need a SIM card first, then activate via our UK mobile portal (spacetalk.co/watch-plans).

Note: if you buy at spacetalk.co, use the same email address that’s connected to your Spacetalk account.

Option 2: Add a Spacetalk Watch Subscription

If you’re outside AU, US or UK, or you prefer to keep your current third-party mobile provider, you can add a standalone Spacetalk Watch Subscription in the app.

While the watch is restricted, open the app and follow the subscribe prompts — they’ll guide you through the Google Play or Apple App Store subscription options.

Frequently asked questions

Access & billing

Why do I need a plan or subscription for watch access? An active Spacetalk Watch Subscription or SIM plan is required for the watch-to-app features (location, chat and settings).

Can I still use the app for free? Yes — app access stays free. Only watch features are restricted, and only for watches using a third-party (non-Spacetalk) SIM without a Spacetalk Watch Subscription.

I have multiple admins on the watch — does everyone have to pay? No. Only one subscription or plan is needed. Once any admin subscribes, the watch is unrestricted for everyone.

What payment methods can I use for the subscription? Subscriptions are handled through your phone’s app store — the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

While the watch is restricted

What happens to my data if I don’t subscribe? Your watch stays paired to your account for 90 days. You won’t see live data in the app until you add a plan or subscription.

Will my kid’s SOS button still work? Yes. Emergency SOS calling is a hardware feature and keeps working. You just won’t see their location in the app during an alert without an active plan or subscription.

Can I still call the watch? Yes. You can place a standard phone call to the watch’s mobile number.

What happens if I leave the watch restricted for a long time? If a watch stays restricted and inactive for 90 continuous days, it’s automatically unpaired.

Plans & regions

Can I switch from a third-party SIM to a Spacetalk SIM? Yes. Buy a plan in the app (AU) or via our regional portals (US and UK). It can take a few hours for an activated plan to show in the app.

I have a Spacetalk plan, but someone else activated it on their account. The quickest fix is to make yourself an admin of that member. If you still need help, contact support via the chat option in the bottom-right.

Is Spacetalk Mobile available in my country? Spacetalk Mobile plans are currently available in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

I live outside AU, UK or US — what should I do? Keep your local provider and add the standalone Spacetalk Watch Subscription in the app.

Can I keep my existing watch number? In Australia, you can port your number over when you activate your Spacetalk mobile plan.

No longer using the watch?

If you’ve stopped using your Spacetalk watch and want to stop these system and restriction notifications, unpair the watch from your account in the app — see Unpair and re-pair a Spacetalk watch. Alternatively, you can delete your account. Note: deleting the app won’t stop the notifications, because your account stays active.

Important: Unpairing removes the watch from your account and deletes that device’s data history. If you use the watch again later, you’ll need to pair it from scratch.
