What is an eSIM and how do I install it? (Australia)

What an eSIM is, how to install your Spacetalk Mobile eSIM, and how to switch between eSIM and a physical SIM in Australia.

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM built into your device. It lets you join the Spacetalk Mobile network without waiting for a physical SIM to arrive.

Note: eSIM is only available for handsets. Spacetalk watches are not eSIM compatible — they use a physical SIM only.

What you need to know about eSIM

  • The eSIM chip is embedded in your handset and cannot be removed or transferred to another phone. However, the information on it is rewritable, so you can change networks without swapping a physical card.

  • If you lose or damage your handset, the eSIM service can be reinstalled on any compatible replacement device.

  • You can only have one active SIM (physical or eSIM) per number. You cannot have the same number active on both a physical SIM and an eSIM at the same time.

How to receive and install your eSIM

  1. Set up your plan and activate it in the Spacetalk App, selecting eSIM at the SIM details step. See Australia: Buy A New Plan or Australia: Activate your Purchased Spacetalk Mobile Plan.

  2. Once your plan is active, we will email your eSIM QR code to the email address on your Spacetalk account. Open the email and scan the QR code, or follow the on-screen steps on your phone to install it.

  3. We will confirm the eSIM is installed before your service is fully ready. If the eSIM does not install after a few attempts, contact our Support team via live chat to arrange a new SIM.

Switching between eSIM and physical SIM

You can move your number between an eSIM and a physical SIM using Replace SIM in the Spacetalk App. See Australia: Swapping between eSIM to a physical SIM for instructions.
