What is the difference between Chat and SMS on the Spacetalk watch?

How Chat and SMS messaging work on the Spacetalk watch and when each is used.

The Spacetalk watch supports two types of messaging: Chat and SMS. They use different networks and work in different ways.

Chat

Chat messages are sent between the Spacetalk App and the watch using mobile data or WiFi. Chat does not use SIM credit.

  • Chat can be started from the app or the watch.

  • Chat can only be sent to pre-approved contacts in the same Space who have a Spacetalk App account.

  • Chat supports one-to-one and group conversations in the app.

For instructions on how to send Chat messages and create group chats, see Using Chat.

SMS

SMS messages are sent using the credit available on the watch's SIM card plan. SMS works just like texting between two mobile phones.

  • SMS can be sent to and received from any mobile number — the recipient does not need the Spacetalk App.

  • You can send an SMS to the watch from your normal phone's messaging app.

Note: SMS requires an active SIM card with credit or an included SMS plan. Chat is the recommended messaging method when the watch is connected to data or WiFi.
